Famed musician and leader of The Band, Robbie Robertson, passed away in August of this year at the age of 80. But he’s left more than a remarkable catalogue of music behind—Robertson collaborated with Vermont distillery WhistlePig on a new rye whiskey appropriately called Robbie’s Blend.
WhistlePig 12 Rye Whiskey – Robbie’s Blend is being released to commemorate the 45th anniversary of the Martin Scorsese concert film The Last Waltz. For WhistlePig master distiller Mitch Mahar, watching the film during the holidays is a longstanding tradition. “Watching The Last Waltz on Thanksgiving is a tradition for many,” he said in a statement. “We’re humbled to give fans another way to celebrate The Last Waltz’s legacy this season with a new whiskey created in collaboration with Robbie himself. With his personal touches, Robbie’s Blend offers a bespoke whiskey that gives you a symphony of flavor in every sip.”
Robbie’s Blend is a 12-year-old Canadian rye whiskey that was finished in three different types of casks, the same as the core Old World Rye but in different proportions: madeira (76 percent), port (19 percent), and sauternes (five percent). As far as Robertson’s involvement with the whiskey, we reached out to a rep for WhistlePig who had this to say, “WhistlePig met Robbie last summer, and together with the Iconoclast team, came up with the idea of a Thanksgiving blend for The Last Waltz. He weighed in on the blend, and they raise their first glass to him.” Tasting notes for this whiskey describe citrus, cedar, walnut, oak, and white pepper on the palate. The Last Waltz is being reissued on vinyl to go along with this whiskey release, and there will be a party at Analog in Nashville tonight to celebrate the launch.
WhistlePig 12 Rye Whiskey – Robbie’s Blend is available now from the WhistlePig website for $175, and can also be found at stores across the state of Tennessee.
